From: Care2 Action Alerts

There are less than a 100 Florida panthers left, making it one of America's most endangered species.

Save the Florida panther.

Although the Florida panther was originally declared an endangered species by the federal government in 1967, the amendment to the Endangered Species Act which required each species so listed to also have "designated critical habitat" did not go into effect until 1978.

As a result, no critical habitat exists for America's only big cat east of the Mississippi.

The Interior Department has the ability under the Endangered Species Act to protect the remaining habitat now. Urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to designate critical habitat for the Florida panther today! »

Fw: Sustainability Movement "Transforming" Curricula Of US Engineering Colleges

US News & World Report (4/15, Grose) reports, "A sustainability sensibility is sweeping through and transforming the curricula in America's colleges of engineering. ... Eighty percent of respondents to a recent survey of U.S. engineering schools by the Center for Sustainable Engineering said they have introduced sustainable engineering material into their classrooms." According to David T. Allen, a chemical engineering professor at the University of Texas–Austin and one of the study's authors, the field is "very much in growth mode." Companies are interested because of regulatory and consumer demands, as well as potential cost savings and access to "the growing pile of government money aimed at green research." And according to educators, "the biggest driver of all is student demand, particularly at the graduate level." Brian Thorn of the Rochester Institute of Technology said that there are many "students who want to engage in what I call 'engineering that you can feel good about.'"

Environmental Defense Fund

Sam shared with me that you recently joined our online Action Network and I wanted to personally welcome you—and tell you a little bit more about EDF's action goals and the vision I know we can achieve together.

I believe we are on the verge of historic environmental breakthroughs. Working together—and with our allies—we can save our planet for ourselves and our children and grandchildren.

For the last 24 years, I've led this amazing organization that has pioneered harnessing market forces to bring about transformational environmental change.

This unique fusion of environmental stewardship and sound economics is a cornerstone of everything we do here at EDF. We start with rigorous science and use economic incentives to propel change.

Our signature approach has laid the foundation for what I predict will be a revolutionary moment in our evolution to a greener, more sustainable economy.

You are a vital key to our success. As a member of our Action Network, your actions and influence—amplified by other EDF members—can sway policy makers and business leaders to chart new territory.

In the coming months, here are some of the ways your voice can help lead the way:

#1 - Fight Climate Change

Passing a national cap on global warming pollution is our #1 priority.

We support a cap-and-trade approach that sets an economy-wide cap on pollution, then encourages entrepreneurs to find the most effective ways to reduce emissions. Learn more.

#2 - Cutting Traffic and Pollution

Traffic is getting worse and so is pollution.

But innovative new tools exist that will make commuting more efficient. Congestion pricing is at the forefront of these options. Learn more.

#3 - Help Fish and Fishermen

We are working to improve fishing practices both to economically benefit fishermen and have fish populations rebound.

Our Oceans team is expanding these successful programs, while also creating higher market demand for eco-friendly seafood from coast to coast. Learn more.

#4 - Protect Wildlife and Ecosystems

We work with landowners, businesses, indigenous groups, and others to restore ecosystems and protect biodiversity.

We are pioneering programs that provide land managers with financial incentives to restore habitats for endangered species. Learn more.

Together, you and I can turn the gloom and doom environmental movement on its head. Nothing is impossible, if we use innovation, creativity and harness market forces to protect our planet and expand economic opportunities for all

As a member of our Action Network, you will help us pioneer this new ground. Thanks for being here.

Sincerely,
Fred Krupp

Stop Obama's Plan for Offshore Oil Drilling on America's Coasts

From: Emily V., Care2 Action Alerts

Hi Green Planet,

In a horrifying move this week, President Obama proposed to open vast new expanses of our coastlines to offshore oil and gas drilling.

Is this the same guy who has repeatedly talked of our need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, invest in clean energy and protect wildlife?

Tell President Obama that you oppose his new offshore drilling plan »

If implemented, Obama's plan would overturn a long-standing moratorium on oil drilling in the Atlantic south of Delaware, putting the North Atlantic right whales -- already one of the rarest marine animals -- at even greater risk. Plus it would jeopardize commercial fisheries and vital habitat for sea turtles off North Carolina's coast.

And despite making Alaska's Bristol Bay off-limits, drilling elsewhere off Alaska would threaten polar bears, walruses and bowhead whales.

The estimated three years oil supply these spots are expected to produce is not worth the permanent loss of habitat. Tell Obama that drilling is not the answer to our energy problem »

Thanks for taking action!
