Save the Mississippi Delta

  Take Action
care2 petitionsite actionAlert

Every 30 minutes, an area of coastal land the size of a football field vanishes from the Mississippi Delta.

The Mississippi Delta is the world's seventh largest river delta, but we are losing these wetlands at an alarming rate. Please do your part by emailing President Obama and urging him to restore coastal Louisiana. »

Eighty years of national actions to channelize and control the Mississippi River for economic development and navigation have diverted sediment and freshwater from the Delta.

As a result, since the 1930s, more than 1.2 million acres, an area the size of Delaware, has disappeared.

Congress directed agencies to work together on a restoration plan in 1990. But while multiple plans have been written, little has been accomplished on the ground. President Obama's leadership offers us a new opportunity to get coastal restoration right. Ask him to restore coastal Louisiana. »

Thanks for taking action!

AZA Grants Certification To Lubee Bat Conservancy

news release

Contact: Steve Feldman 301-562-0777 ext. 252

AZA Grants Certification To Lubee Bat Conservancy

Silver Spring, Maryland (March 16, 2010) – The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) today announced that the Lubee Bat Conservancy was granted certification by AZA's independent Accreditation Commission.

Located on a 110-acre property outside Gainesville, Florida, Lubee Bat Conservancy houses the largest and most diverse collection of tropical Old World fruit bats (Pteropodidae) in the world, and is recognized as a unique center dedicated to research, education and conservation of these threatened bats. The center hosts researchers and offers teaching and informal science education opportunities in partnership with colleges, universities, zoological institutions, museums and others.

"Lubee Bat Conservancy is one of the best in the world because it has met the highest standards in the world," said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. "It takes hard work and dedication to meet Association of Zoos and Aquariums Standards."

Each year Lubee Bat Conservancy connects to the local north central Florida community through environmental education programs delivered to local students, and it's "Florida Annual Bat Festival". Hosted at the center in the fall, this popular "batty" event attracted 2,300 visitors in 2009, offering a world class setting in which to view the real stars of the night; bats. This year, Lubee Bat Conservancy opens the doors of its newly certified center to the public on Saturday 13th November.

To be certified, Lubee Bat Conservancy underwent a thorough investigation to ensure it has and will continue to meet ever-rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety. AZA requires zoos and aquariums to successfully complete this rigorous review and inspection every five years in order to be members of the Association.

"As a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Lubee Bat Conservancy is a true leader in wildlife conservation," Maddy added.

The certification process includes a detailed application and a meticulous on-site inspection by a team of trained zoo and aquarium professionals. The inspecting team observes all aspects of the institution's operation in areas such as animal care; keeper training; safety for visitors, staff, and animals; conservation efforts; veterinary programs; financial stability; risk management; and other areas.  The inspection team prepares an extensive written report for the Accreditation Commission.  Finally, top officials are interviewed at a formal Commission hearing, after which certification is granted, tabled, or denied.  Any institution that is denied may reapply one year after the Commission's decision is made.

Founded in 1924, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of zoos and aquariums in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. Look for the AZA logo whenever you visit a zoo or aquarium as your assurance that you are supporting an institution dedicated to providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for you, and a better future for all living things. AZA is a leader in global wildlife conservation, and your link to helping animals in their native habitats. For more information about AZA, please visit www.aza.org. For more information about Lubee Bat Conservancy, please visit www.lubee.org

Please contact Dr Allyson Walsh (Director) at Lubee Bat Conservancy at 352-485-1250 for additional information about the institution, including special events and activities for visitors and its ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation and science education.

Florida's Springs Need Your Help

Florida's springs—once clear blue and thriving—are fading. Competition with human consumption has reduced many of their flows, and nutrient pollution has overstimulated the growth of algae in others, coating them in a green slime. With more than 700 springs, Florida is thought to be the densest concentration in the world of these brilliant windows to the aquifer, a source of tremendous ecological wealth, as well as a significant economic driver for Florida's rural communities

March 27 Umatilla, Florida Black Bear Festival

Dear Andrew,

Join Defenders at the 11th Annual Florida Black Bear Festival in Umatilla next Saturday, March 27th!

As spring approaches and Florida black bear cubs begin to come out of their dens to explore their new world, I can't think of a better time to get outside and celebrate these amazing animals.

Be a part of the celebration this year: RSVP now to let us know you're coming!

What: 11th Annual Florida Black Bear Festival! (free and open to all)
When: Saturday, March 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Where: Cadwell Park (4 Cassady Street) - Umatilla, FL

Defenders organized the first Florida Black Bear Festival back in 1999 -- and it just gets bigger and better each time. There's something for everone this year, so you won't want to miss it!

RSVP now to let us know we'll be seeing you at the Festival on March 27th.

Festival Highlights Include:

  • Field trips into the Ocala Forest led by bear experts and tours to Carr Cabin
  • Live music and food and craft vendors
  • Locally and nationally renowned authors
  • A new "Bear Den" with movies and presentations about bears and how to avoid conflicts with them

Defenders of Wildlife is sponsoring the Children's Pavilion to make learning about the Florida black bear FUN! So don't forget to stop by and say hello -- and join us for arts and crafts and games that are fun for the whole family.

Umatilla is just outside the Ocala National Forest, where most of our black bears live -- and many people in the area have been paid "special visits" by these curious creatures. Because people cause most of the conflicts between humans and bears, it's vital for Bear Country residents to learn more about what bears do, why they do it and what can be done to help them survive.

I hope you'll come out and join us on Saturday, March 27th for a fun-filled day to celebrate the Florida black bear and learn more about how we cam help make the future a bit brighter for these rare bears. Don't forget to RSVP to let us know you're coming!

We hope to see you there!

Fast Facts about the Florida black bear (Ursus americanus floridanus):

  • This threatened subspecies of black bear is found in Florida, southern Georgia and southern Alabama.
  • Because it's usually warm in Florida, many of our black bears do not hibernate, or only hibernate for a short time.
  • Most females reproduce just once every two years.
  • Florida black bears face several threats -- the most serious include habitat loss and fragmentation, logging, human encroachment, vehicle collisions and poaching.

Defenders protects Florida black bears by working to preserve a connected system of wildlife habitat for them and educating people about how they can be better neighbors. Visit our website to learn more about our work.

Elephants Are Worth More Than Their Tusks

care2 petitionsite actionAlert

Hi Andrew,

Poachers kill an estimated 38,000 elephants every year for their tusks. While the ivory trade is illegal, demand for it grows -- especially when countries such as Zambia and Tanzania propose one-off sales of ivory stockpiles.

But we can stop them and protect Africa's elephants »

Members of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) are meeting right now and will discuss the international ban on ivory trade in six days. The United States was the first country to sign on to this international agreement that protects wildlife. Now we must live up to its tenets.

Tell Congress to extend the international ban on ivory and reject requests for one-off sales »

In testimony before Congress, Patrick Omondi, a top Kenyan wildlife official, proposed extending the current ban from nine to 20 years, and ending one-off sales, ideas Kenya and 23 other nations in the African Elephant Coalition support. Congress must heed his words.

Protect the African elephant -- demand Congress extend the ivory trade ban and reject one-off sale requests from Zambia and Tanzania »

Thanks for taking action!

A NOTE FROM THE ARTIST:

This is a time of New Beginnings, and the patterns of perfection from the Heavenly Realms are flooding into the consciousness of an
awakening Humanity.

Since the Arts are our creative means of connecting to higher dimensions, through its powers, we have the ability to bring
inspirational images, sounds, colors into our physical manifestation. Helping raise our emotions in times of so much fear and
distress!

Being part of a world transformation is our responsibility. With every step we make, every thought we think, we are either adding to
the Light of the world or to the shadows of it. We are living challenging times, we are in the middle of a transitional time, the
shift between the Era of Pisces and the Era of Aquarius, the shift between colors as well, we are moving as humanity from the blue
color to the Purple color, being this one the highest vibrational color that helps us to connect to our spiritual realm.
We are entering the Violet Ray Era, welcome my friends.

Are we ready to become a butterfly? The time has come! The Birth is here!
Heaven is ready to merge within us, and as we awaken and elevate ourselves, Earth and Heaven will then blend divinely. As we create
visions of love and inspiration, the New Heaven and the New Earth, will be born into higher levels of consciousness. We are
witnessing the birth of a New humanity that is merging with the Light of all Creation.

As we hold the power of our attention on those images that will uplift us and assist us in this new and unique transitional
journey!.We will then create the world we have all been wishing to have for centuries!

As we explore a radically different, more optimistic interpretation of what is really happening in our lives, and the reality we are
living, we are all hearing, and being pumped to be in a fearful state, by the "end of times", as the Mayan prophecy has revealed
thousands of years ago! - Yes, it is in many scripts written that our times are referring to this "end," this end is really part of
the changes of the entry to a New Era ,the Birth. As the woman in the painting that is pregnant and about to give birth to a New
Humanity. The Era of Aquarius is here, the world as we have known it is transforming, it is not that it will happen on the year
2012, it is already happening now! The pregnancy is the creation and preparation for the Birth!

The Man has the fire and the key in his hands; this represents the answer to our transformation.
What if we could focus differently on the Mayan prophecy? Instead of visualizing the prediction(and other predictions) of a physical
destruction of the material world, we focus on it being a death and rebirth of our new World? And with it a birth of a higher state
of Consciousness and a mass inner transformation of humanity."

We need to make a decision how we see the glass. is it full or is it empty? Are we ready to discover that the left empty part of the
glass has never been empty; as it is full of atoms of light? And it has more opportunity for containing the Light in itself?

Our thoughts can create our misery and pain, or.our thoughts can create bliss and joy. Instead of just allowing ourselves to be
bombarded with painful images of Humanity's suffering, and being destroyed, I invite you to meditate and focus our energies in
re-creating a New World, a World where as co-creators we become responsible for our actions, and we have in its infinite plan
leaving a world of a healthy planet to our children and live within our magnificent Mother Earth and all life within it!

The Arts, will become again a indispensable tool to connect to the Infinite Light into which we are ascending.

The arising of the new consciousness has begun; the awakening is so needed...NOW!
To help save our Earth and Humanity!
We are running out of Time!

We humbly ask for forgiveness to Planet Earth and to it's Life,
For all of our trespasses.
As we awaken, One by One,
A new Humanity will rise...
Creating together
A World of Love and Peace!

Don't Let Congress Wreck the Clean Air Act

Last year, the Environmental Protection Agency announced that it would use its authority under the Clean Air Act to reduce carbon
pollution -- and protect polar bears, other wildlife and our natural resources from the devastating impacts of climate change.

But Congressional plans, backed by polluter lobbyists, are underway to weaken the Clean Air Act -- and prevent decisive action to
address climate change.

You can help: Write your senators and representative today and urge them to oppose any attempts to weaken the Clean Air Act that
would sabotage efforts to regulate greenhouse gases.

Feature Story

Deadly Ivory

Elephants are literally dying for their teeth. Despite an international ban on the elephant ivory trade, 38,000 elephants are killed
by poachers each year for their tusks.1

As wildlife trade representatives meet in Doha, Qatar this month, they'll debate a proposal to allow countries with stockpiles of
ivory to sell it -- a move that could spur an already booming illicit international market for tusks.

Take action today: Urge representatives of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) to reject any
proposals to trade elephant ivory and support improved international protections for elephants.

Cold Snap Challenges Florida Wildlife

Unseasonably cold weather has affected Florida's iconic wildlife, including manatees, sea turtles, crocodiles, saltwater fish.

In the first six weeks of 2010, over 300 manatees were found dead, mostly from the frigid temperatures -- and cold-stressed manatees
continue to be rescued. Agencies and volunteers collected over 4,500 stranded sea turtles, many of which survived after treatment.
And over 100 endangered crocodiles have perished in the cold weather.

Scientists say that extreme temperature shifts -- both cold and warm -- are associated with global climate change.

Rockies, reflecting Liz's passion not only for wildlife, but also for this beautiful region of the country.

In his new book, Liz Claiborne: The Legend, The Woman, Ortenberg celebrates his wife's lifelong support of wildlife conservation and
chronicles her battle with cancer.

"Liz Claiborne's love of nature and passion for wildlife is an inspiration," said Defenders President Rodger Schlickeisen. "Art's

In Memoriam

Sam Hamilton

The conservation community reeled with the sudden and unexpected death of Sam Hamilton, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service.

Sam's career in conservation spanned over thirty years beginning at age 15 as a Youth Conservation Corps member in Mississippi.
Throughout his career, he championed collaboration among federal and state organizations and private citizens, leading to innovative
partnerships to restore and conserve wildlife habitat across the country.

"Sam Hamilton was making great strides in unifying and mobilizing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after what was a long and
difficult eight years under the last administration," said Defenders' Executive Vice President and former Fish and Wildlife Service
Director Jamie Rappaport Clark. "He brought integrity and biological creativity back to the agency."

Our condolences go out to the Hamilton family. While we have lost a great conservation colleague way too soon, we are confident that
his important work conserving wild things and special places will continue within the Fish and Wildlife Service and beyond.

Ashley Judd Has a Video Message Save Wolves

Save America's Wolves

Urge President Obama to End the War on Wolves

Watch a special video appeal from Ashley Judd
http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=ux8Jfb6fj6oaMkNfP-S5zA

Activist, actress and Defenders board member Ashley Judd has recorded a special message for you.

Please watch Ashley Judd's video message and take action to help save wolves.

Right now, the wolves we've fought so hard to return to the Greater Yellowstone and the northern Rockies are dying -- victims of the
Obama administration's decision to prematurely eliminate life-saving federal protections these magnificent animals need to help
reclaim their place in the American West.

Please watch the special video that Defenders board member, actress and activist Ashley Judd has recorded for you, take action to
save our wolves and help spread the word.

Hundreds of wolves have been killed in Idaho and Montana since March 2009 -- more than 230 during wolf hunts that began in September
and continue in Idaho even now because of the Obama administration's action.

Idaho has already extended its hunting season, putting even more wolf families in the crosshairs -- even pregnant wolf mothers that
only give birth in the spring.

To stop the killing, I need you to do three things today.

#1. Watch the video.
Check out Ashley Judd's powerful new video and learn what's at stake in our fight to save the wolves of the northern Rockies and
Greater Yellowstone.

#2. Take action.
http://action.defenders.org/site/R?i=yWo_sUhiIWU_rrKg4a0GlQ
Help us send 40,000 messages to President Obama by Friday, March 5th.

#3. Spread the word.
Use email, Facebook and/or Twitter to encourage at least 3 other people to take action too.

Defenders of Wildlife is in court right now fighting to restore life-saving protections for these magnificent wolves and ensure that
Endangered Species Act protections are determined by sound science, not political boundaries and political manipulation of special
interest groups.

The federal judge who will rule on the case indicated last year that Defenders' case is likely to succeed on its merits.
Unfortunately, court victories take time. and our wolves are being killed right now.

President Obama can fix this mistake and save our wolves, but he needs to hear from you. Please watch Ashley Judd's new video, take
action and spread the word today.

With Gratitude,

Rodger Schlickeisen,
President
