Protecting Threatened and Endangered Wildlife

From: Defenders of Wildlife http://www.defenders.org

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for taking the time to help protect polar bears and other threatened and endangered wildlife. With your help, we can
reverse the Bush Administration's eleventh-hour assault on protections for America's imperiled wildlife and ensure that these
animals get the protection they need to survive.

With Gratitude,

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski and other allies of Big Oil are opposing legislative provisions that could help save America's polar
bears and other threatened and endangered animals from extinction.

Take action for polar bears

Urge your Senators to reverse the Bush Administration's awful endangered species rules.

The Senate could vote on legislative provisions to reverse the Bush rules in the next few days, so please help us send 35,000
messages by Monday.

Polar Bears (R. Nicklin, National Geographic)
Fast Fact: Polar bears could disappear from America in the next 50 years.

Dear Andrew,

The Bush/Cheney Administration has been gone for more than a month, but their eleventh-hour regulatory shenanigans are still
threatening our polar bears and other threatened and endangered wildlife.

Before leaving office, the Bush/Cheney Administration rammed through a regulatory change to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) that
threatens efforts to save polar bears, wolves, manatees and nearly 1,400 other species from extinction.

Speak out for America's vanishing polar bears and other threatened and endangered animals. Urge your Senators to reverse the Bush
Administration's awful endangered species rules.

The Bush/Cheney regulatory changes eliminated scientific review by the Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries
Service of projects that could harm imperiled wildlife. These changes also block important conservation measures under the
Endangered Species Act to help the polar bear.

Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed its omnibus spending bill, including provisions that would enable Interior Secretary
Ken Salazar to reverse the Bush Administration's awful endangered species proposals. Unfortunately, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski --
backed by her Governor, Sarah Palin -- and others in the Senate are now working furiously to strip these provisions from the
Senate's version of the omnibus bill.

Please take action now. Urge your Senators to stand up to Murkowski and help reverse the Bush/Cheney assault on protections for
polar bears and other imperiled animals.

The Senate is expected to vote on the omnibus spending bill in the next few days, and we need your help to show broad support for
real action to protect polar bears and other imperiled animals. Please take action today and help us send at least 35,000 messages
to the Senate by Monday.

If Murkowski and Palin are successful, polar bears and hundreds of other imperiled animals could be denied important help under the
Endangered Species Act -- protections that are increasingly important as animals like polar bears struggle to survive the effects of
global warming.

Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey estimate that as many as two-thirds of the world's polar bears could be lost in the next 50
years -- including America's dwindling polar bear population.

Polar bears need our help today. Please send a message to your Senators right now and urge them to ensure that polar bears get the
help they need to avoid extinction.

A Senate vote on this bill could come soon, so please take action right now to help protect our polar bears and other wildlife.

With Gratitude,

Rodger Schlickeisen, President
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. Defenders of Wildlife is fighting hard in Congress, in the courts and on the ground to save our polar bears. Please consider
adopting a polar bear mom and cub to help support these and other vital efforts to protect threatened and endangered species.

Help Protect Standing Forests

On Facebook join the cause Protect the Rainforest to Slow Climate Change.
http://apps.facebook.com/causes/122511?m=7d290bcb

From Cheri Sugal

With the loss of tropical forests now the leading contributor of CO2 to the atmosphere, efforts like ours are no longer just about
biodiversity. They are also about climate change - an issue that affects all of us. For example, more CO2 in the atmosphere means
continued shrinking of glaciers and rising sea levels, with dire consequences for coastal areas.

That is why we are working hard to grow our cause and provide yet another example of the potential of the internet to mobilize
social change. You have the power to help make a change. Our goal is to recruit 1 million members to our cause this year. You can
help by inviting 60 of your friends each day (the maximum allowed) and encouraging them to visit our web site:
www.rainforest2reef.org.

Thank you once again for showing your commitment to protecting standing forests.

Sea turtles drowning, crushed, caught, and at risk of extinction

From: Rodger Schlickeisen, Defenders of Wildlife defenders@mail.defenders.org

Andrew -- Thank you for taking action last week to save imperiled sea turtles from bottom longline fishing. So far, more than 45,000
caring people like you have signed our petition, and we'll send a powerful message about the importance of protecting these amazing
animals when we deliver your comments at the beginning of March.

Please read the message below and support our on-the-ground efforts to prevent sea turtle deaths caused by indiscriminate fishing
practices and other threats.

Unable to free themselves from razor-sharp hooks, sea turtles die slow and agonizing deaths, wounded and drowning in waters where
these gentle creatures have made their home for millions of years.

Since just last week, more than 45,000 caring wildlife supporters like you have already signed our petition to save sea turtles in
the Gulf of Mexico from the hooks of bottom longline fishing.

Now please help us stop fishing practices that kill imperiled sea turtles and protect baby sea turtles and the nesting grounds that
they need to survive with a special donation.

Sea turtles take a long time to mature and reproduce, making each individual important to the continued survival of these ancient
ocean travelers.

But sea turtle hatchlings can become confused by artificial lighting on nesting beaches and many never make it to sea. Those who do
make it face drowning by the nets and razor-sharp hooks of irresponsible fishing practices -- and mothers ready to lay their eggs
face the loss of vital nesting beaches due to development or rising sea levels.

Without our help, sea turtles could be doomed to extinction.

With your compassionate help, we can save the lives of sea turtles and help save them from extinction. Please make a tax-deductible
contribution today to help save these beautiful sea creatures from being killed by harmful fishing practices and habitat loss.

Sea Turtle Plush

You can make a life-saving difference. Donate $50 or more and we'll even send you a plush sea turtle like this as a reminder of the
important part you're playing in the fight to save sea turtles for future generations to enjoy.

All sea turtles in U.S. waters are listed as threatened or endangered, and we're working hard to save them from extinction:

Off America's coasts. As Defenders of Wildlife's head lawyer Bob Dreher reported last week, we're determined to suspend bottom
longline fishing in the Gulf of Mexico -- a practice that killed hundreds of imperiled sea turtles in 2006-2007. More than 45,000
Defenders supporters have joined the fight, signing our petition urging the National Marine Fisheries Service to act immediately to
protect the Gulf's dwindling sea turtle population.

In Florida. Elizabeth Fleming and the rest of our Florida staff are working with local beach residents to address beach lighting
that threatens sea turtle populations and disorients nesting mothers and baby sea turtles alike, working to protect sea turtle nests
from destructive off-road driving and advocating for decisive action to safeguard sea turtle nesting beaches from the damaging
effects of sea level rise.

In Mexico. Defenders sea turtle specialist Juan Carlos Cantu has spent years saving sea turtles. He's purchased "de-hookers" to free
sea turtles from fishing gear and held educational workshops to train local fishermen on their use. He's also published educational
comic books and enlisted Mexican sports celebrities in the fight to save sea turtles. Juan Carlos is now working to establish a new
sanctuary to safeguard sea turtles off Baja California Sur.

Around the world. Defenders staff are working to prevent trade in imperiled sea turtles, so that our sea turtles have a shot at
surviving for future generations to enjoy.

Defenders has a multi-pronged plan to save our sea turtles from extinction, but we need your support. Can you help us meet out goal
to raise $45,000 by the end of February to support these and other wildlife-saving efforts?

Please donate today to help support Defenders of Wildlife's concrete efforts on the ground and around the world to save imperiled
sea turtles.

Stop roads from ripping through prized forest land

Roads tearing up forests?

Don't let it happen. http://action.wilderness.org/campaign/nez_perce/xg7nnkbr1edxd6b?

In the heart of central Idaho, in a landscape filled with clear running rivers, steep mountainsides and lush vegetation lies the Nez
Perce National Forest. The Nez Perce Forest is one of the most important remaining sanctuaries for endangered Chinook Salmon, and
also provides important habitat for elk, Canada Lynx, wolves, bald eagles and a variety of other species. The Clearwater region also
has several wilderness quality roadless lands.

Motorized use in the area has been steadily degrading the important values that make the Nez Perce country unique. Meadows have been
torn up, wildlife and cultural resources like the historic Nez Perce trail have been damaged, and the roads have also sprouted off
into further unauthorized trails.

Yet the Forest Service has proposed some roads in the forest that could close the door to gaining Wilderness protection for the
forest in the future.

Won't you help us ensure that important Roadless areas retain their remote character. Click here to take action.
http://action.wilderness.org/campaign/nez_perce/xg7nnkbr1edxd6b?

Portions of this forest have consistently been ranked by the Forest Service as having the highest possible ranking for Wilderness
designation, and the Forest Service should help protect the values that make this place special.

The Forest Service is proposing several good motorized route closures in important areas, but there are still some routes that will
bisect important watersheds and wilderness quality lands. If these routes are designated, gaining Wilderness designation will be
much more difficult in the future.

Tell the Forest Service to keep this forest pristine.
http://action.wilderness.org/campaign/nez_perce/xg7nnkbr1edxd6b?

Please hurry - your comment must be received by Wednesday

Best wishes,

Kathy Kilmer

Saving Sea Turtles

From: Defenders of Wildlife
Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2009 10:14 AM

Dear Andrew,

Thank you for taking the time to sign our petition to save sea turtles. With your help, we can end the ongoing deaths of loggerheads
and other imperiled sea turtles.

I want you to know that your comments have been received and we will deliver them to officials at the National Marine Fisheries
Service on or before March 1st.

In the meantime, if you would like to do more to help us protect sea turtles, please forward the message below to at least three of
your friends to encourage them to take action to safeguard the lives of imperiled sea turtles. With your help, we can reach our goal
of collecting 40,000 comments in favor of an emergency suspension of the bottom longline fishery in the Gulf of Mexico and show
federal officials that there is broad public support for immediate action to protect our imperiled sea turtles.

With Gratitude,

Help save sea turtles

It's a cruel way to die. and it's happening to some of the planet's most ancient and endangered creatures. Snagged by razor sharp
hooks on fishing lines that span anywhere from four to nine nautical miles, endangered sea turtles are drowning and dying right now
off America's shores.

My name is Bob Dreher, and I run the legal department here at Defenders of Wildlife. To help save these turtles from extinction, I'm
overseeing a legal challenge right now to suspend the use of bottom longline fishing gear in vital sea turtle habitat in the Gulf of
Mexico.

With your help today, I may be able to avoid a costly and lengthy legal battle that could rage on as more sea turtles die, and to
secure immediate protection for imperiled sea turtles off our coasts.

Speak out for endangered sea turtles today. Sign our petition to the National Marine Fisheries Service urging the agency to suspend
bottom longline fishing in the Gulf of Mexico so the beautiful sea voyagers have a shot at survival.

Between July 2006 and the end of 2007, the government estimates that the Gulf of Mexico bottom longline fishery, which targets reef
fish like grouper and tilefish, resulted in the capture of nearly 1,000 threatened and endangered sea turtles -- and that in more
than 80% of these incidents, the turtles were injured or killed.

Six of seven species of sea turtles are listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act, and indiscriminate
fishing practices are a grave threat to sea turtles around the world. Loggerheads nesting on Florida beaches -- the same turtles
captured in the Gulf of Mexico bottom longline fishery -- have plummeted by more than 40% over the last decade.

Take action now to save our sea turtles. Sign the petition to the National Marine Fisheries Service today.

Earlier this month, my legal team and I met with officials at the National Marine Fisheries Service to encourage them to save
loggerheads and other imperiled sea turtles with an emergency suspension of the Gulf of Mexico bottom longline fishery. They were
receptive, but now federal officials need to hear from you.

Please sign our petition to save the lives of sea turtles today, and we will hand deliver your comments to the agency before the end
of the month. With your help, we hope to collect at least 40,000 comments in favor of protecting sea turtles from bottom longline
fishing by March 1st.

Sea turtles have been swimming in our planet's waters for millions of years. With your help, we can help ensure that they are around
for future generations to enjoy.

With Gratitude,

Bob Dreher, VP for Conservation Law
Vice President for Conservation Law
Defenders of Wildlife

P.S. Federal officials need to act now to protect sea turtles. Please sign our petition to save sea turtles today, so we can deliver
your comments to the National Marine Fisheries Service before March 1st.

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law

From: President Barack Obama info@barackobama.com
Sent: Tuesday, February 17, 2009 7:48 PM
Subject: A big first step -- thank you

Friend --

Today, I signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law.

This is a historic step -- the first of many as we work together to climb out of this crisis -- and I want to thank you for your
resolve and your support.

You organized thousands of house meetings. You shared your ideas and personal stories. And you informed your friends and neighbors
about the need for immediate action. You continue to be a powerful voice for change throughout the country.

The recovery plan will create or save 3.5 million jobs, provide tax cuts for working and middle-class families, and invest in health
care and clean energy.

It's a bold plan to address a huge problem, and it will require my vigilance and yours to make sure it's done right.

I've assigned a team of managers to oversee the implementation of the recovery act. We are committed to making sure no dollar is
wasted. But accountability begins with you.

That's why my administration has created www.Recovery.gov, a new website where citizens can track every dollar spent and every job
created. We'll invite you and your neighbors to weigh in with comments and questions.

Our progress will also be measured by the tens of thousands of personal stories submitted by people who are struggling to make ends
meet. If you haven't already, you can read stories from families all across the country:

http://my.barackobama.com/yourstories

Your stories are the heart of this recovery plan, and that's what I'll focus on every day as President.

With your continued support, we'll emerge a stronger and more prosperous nation.

Thank you,
President Barack Obama

Don't Let Climate Change Destroy More Ecosystems

Protect our forests from global warming!

Forward to friends and colleagues

Trees are the latest species seeing shifts in migration patterns due to global warming. In a study led by the U.S. Forest Service, 11 out of 15 northern-species trees shifted on average more than 12 miles north from their older counterparts.

We must take action to stop tree migration and other effects of global warming.

Not only does the shift in migration of trees reflect the undeniable presence of global warming and the changing of our world, but it also threatens the biodiversity of the forests and our nation's reliance on the natural resource.

Forest ecosystems are an extremely important natural resource to the U.S., considering that one-third of the nation's lands are forests. But the altered migration patterns could change this.

According to the study's projections, U.S. species such as the yellow birch could move well beyond the Canadian border by the early 2100s.

Tell Congress to help protect our forests - and our earth - from global warming.

Boy Scouts: Stop Clearcutting Forests

From: Care2 Action Alerts actionalerts@care2.com
Subject: Boy Scouts: Stop Clearcutting Forests

A nation-wide review has found that some Boy Scouts of America administrators have significantly damaged tens of thousands of acres of forestland through clearcutting or other means of high-impact logging.

Tell the Boy Scouts to stop destroying forests. http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AfkNQ/Yzsa/pdlw

The investigation, conducted by five Hearst newspapers, found that at least 26 councils have logged across 34,000 acres or more. Some of the destroyed areas are delicate ecosystems inhabited by protected species like salmon, timber wolves, bald eagles and spotted owls.

The Boy Scouts have a long-standing reputation of positively interacting with the environment and teaching members to connect with and respect nature. But some council leaders have betrayed their environmental values in the interest of increasing profits.

Tell the Boy Scouts of America to make sure all council leaders are staying true to the environmentally conscious message they promote and to stop logging their wilderness. They should be teaching their scouts how to save our planet - not destroying the homes
of protected species.

Stop the hypocrisy of Boy Scouts of America.
