This December newsletter from the IWA showcases many of their accomplishments. For example, if you click on Articles you will find
an enormous number of publications. Just the Sustainability category has about 27 articles in itself. Almost any interest in the
water resources field is represented here. You can also leave comments on any article, and help strengthen the dialogue.

IWA is a worldwide organization with a number of offices, and a great amount of its activity is in cyberspace. This is a very
valuable resource for any water resources professional.

Group Spaces: Your Experiences

The European Commission is funding the collaborative project PREPARED: Enabling Change. Over a period of five years, PREPARED will
work with urban utilities to develop advanced strategies to meet anticipated challenges in the water supply and sanitation sectors
brought about by climate change.

PREPARED: Enabling Change

To help facilitate communications, PREPARED have set up their own group work space on the WaterWiki. The group are using this space
to circulate minutes from meetings, presentations, and country profiles.

It was important that the space should be access controlled. Project Management Team member, Bianca Van der Wolf, says:

"We already have a website for public purposes. But the Wiki is being used by the PREPARED partners for sharing documents and
deliverables which are not suitable for public viewing".

Carbon Dioxide Levels Continue to Rise and Charles Keeling

MAUNA LOA OBSERVATORY, Hawaii — Two gray machines sit inside a pair of utilitarian buildings here, sniffing the fresh breezes that
blow across thousands of miles of ocean.

They make no noise. But once an hour, they spit out a number, and for decades, it has been rising relentlessly.

The first machine of this type was installed on Mauna Loa in the 1950s at the behest of Charles David Keeling, a scientist from San
Diego. His resulting discovery, of the increasing level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, transformed the scientific
understanding of humanity's relationship with the earth. A graph of his findings is inscribed on a wall in Washington as one of the
great achievements of modern science.

Yet, five years after Dr. Keeling's death, his discovery is a focus not of celebration but of conflict. It has become the touchstone
of a worldwide political debate over global warming.

EPA Administrator Jackson regarding Her Meeting with 10 U.S. Senators on Chromium-6

WASHINGTON – Yesterday, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson met with
Senators Richard Durbin (IL), Mark Kirk (IL), Debbie Stabenow (MI), Bob
Casey (PA), Ben Nelson (NE), Bill Nelson (FL), Daniel Akaka (HI), Dianne
Feinstein (CA), Jeff Bingaman (NM), and Jeff Merkley (OR) to brief them
on the issue of chromium-6 in drinking water as it relates to this
week's Environmental Working Group (EWG) report.

The following is a statement from Administrator Lisa P. Jackson
regarding that meeting:

"Yesterday, I briefed members of the Senate on chromium-6 in drinking
water supplies as it relates to the recent Environmental Working Group
report. EPA has already been working to review and incorporate the
ground-breaking science referenced in this report. However, as a mother
and the head of EPA, I am still concerned about the prevalence of
chromium-6 in our drinking water.

Today, I am announcing a series of actions that the EPA will take over
the coming days to address chromium-6 in our drinking water. It is clear
that the first step is to understand the prevalence of this problem.
While the EWG study was informative, it only provided a snapshot in
time. EPA will work with local and state officials to get a better
picture of exactly how widespread this problem is. In the meantime, EPA
will issue guidance to all water systems in the country to help them
develop monitoring and sampling programs specifically for chromium-6.
We will also offer significant technical assistance to the communities
cited in the EWG report with the highest levels of chromium-6 to help
ensure they quickly develop an effective chromium-6 specific monitoring
program.

The science behind chromium-6 is evolving. EPA is already on a path
toward identifying and addressing any potential health threats from
excessive, long-term exposure with its new draft assessment released
this past fall. This assessment still needs to be reviewed by
independent scientists as an essential step toward tightening drinking
water standards for chromium-6. Strong science and the law will continue
to be the backbone of our decision-making at EPA. EPA takes this matter
seriously and we will continue to do all that we can, using good science
and the law, to protect people's health and our environment."

Meeting Readout:

In yesterday's meeting with the 10 U.S. senators, Administrator Jackson
described EPA's current chromium-6 risk assessment, which is a review
EPA immediately started in response to new science in 2008 showing a
link between chromium-6 ingestion and cancer. This risk assessment –
which would be the first step to updating the drinking water regulations
– will be finalized after an independent scientific peer review in 2011.
Administrator Jackson told the senators that based on the draft risk
assessment, EPA will likely revise drinking water regulations to account
for this new science. These revisions would only take place after an
independent science panel has verified the underlying science.

Administrator Jackson told the senators that EPA currently requires
testing for total chromium which includes chromium-6. She noted that the
testing does not distinguish what percentage of the total chromium is
chromium-6 versus chromium-3, so EPA's regulation assumes that the
sample is 100% chromium-6. This means the current chromium-6 standard
has been as protective and precautionary as the science of that time
allowed.

Administrator Jackson told the senators that according to the most
recent data, all public water facilities are in compliance with the
existing total chromium standards, but she agrees that chromium-6 is a
contaminant of concern. She also told the senators that people can have
their water tested and install home treatment devices certified to
remove chromium-6 if they are concerned about the levels of chromium-6
in their drinking water.

The administrator concluded the briefing by making the following points
and commitments:

1) While provocative, the EWG report is a self-described
"snapshot" in time and does not provide a full, long-term picture of the
prevalence of chromium-6 in our drinking water. EPA will work with state
and local officials to better determine how wide-spread and prevalent
this contaminant is.

2) Meanwhile, EPA will issue guidance to all water systems on
how to test for and sample drinking water specifically for chromium-6.
This guidance will provide EPA-approved methods and other technical
information.

3) EPA will also offer technical expertise and assistance to the
communities cited in the EWG study with the highest levels of chromium.
This assistance will include providing technical experts to work with
water system operators and engineers to ensure the latest testing and
monitoring is being utilized.

4) Once EPA's chromium-6 risk assessment is finalized, EPA will
work quickly to determine if new standards need to be set. Based on the
current draft assessment, which has yet to undergo scientific peer
review, it is likely that EPA will tighten drinking water standards to
address the health risks posed by chromium-6.

USDA Offers Conservation Funding to Organic Producers
Initiative in its Third Year

WASHINGTON, December 20, 2010 - Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen
Merrigan today announced USDA will provide funding to help organic
producers and those transitioning to organic production implement
resource conservation practices on their agricultural operations.

"Increasing consumer demand for organically grown foods is providing new
opportunities for small and mid-size farmers to prosper and stay
competitive in today's economy," Merrigan said. "The 2008 Farm Bill
calls for this assistance, and we want to help these farmers protect the
natural resources on their land and create conditions that help foster
organic production."

Fiscal year (FY) 2011 marks the third year of USDA's Organic Initiative,
and up to $50 million is available this year for producers to plan and
implement conservation practices that address natural resource concerns
in ways that are consistent with organic production. For example,
organic producers may use the funding to plant cover crops, establish
integrated pest management plans, or implement nutrient management
systems consistent with organic certification standards.

Eligible producers include those certified through USDA's National
Organic Program, those transitioning to certified organic production,
and those who meet organic standards but are exempt from certification
because their gross annual organic sales are less than $5,000. In FY
2010, NRCS obligated nearly $24 million through the Organic Initiative
to help producers implement conservation practices.

Organic Initiative funding is provided through the Environmental Quality
Incentives Program (EQIP), a voluntary conservation program administered
by USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) that promotes
agricultural production and environmental quality as compatible national
goals. The 2008 Farm Bill provided for assistance specifically for
organic farm operations and those converting to organic production.

Under Organic Initiative contracts, producers are paid 75 percent of the
cost for the organic conservation measures they implement. Beginning,
limited resource, and socially disadvantaged producers are paid 90
percent. The program provides up to $20,000 per year per person or legal
entity, with a maximum total of $80,000 over six years.

Producers interested in applying for Organic Initiative funding must
submit applications through their local NRCS Service Center, which can
be located through the Web site at

are accepted on a continuous basis, with the cutoff date set for March
4, 2011.

NRCS is celebrating 75 years helping people help the land. Since 1935,
the NRCS conservation delivery system has advanced a unique partnership
with state and local governments and private landowners delivering
conservation based on specific, local conservation needs, while
accommodating state and national interests.

On behalf of the birds and other wildlife that we are all working to protect, we wanted to thank you for sending letters, making phone calls, and staying informed.

Thanks to you, in the past year, we have fended off repeated threats to the Clean Air Act, prevented a landfill from encroaching upon the Joshua Tree National Park, and protected thousands of acres of globally-significant wetlands around Teshekpuk Lake in Alaska. Audubon also was the first national organization on the scene with staff and volunteers to respond to the horrific BP oil spill. These are just a few of the year's highlights, and they are certainly your highlights as well, because our activists and volunteers had a hand in every one of these accomplishments.

Simply put, we could not achieve conservation victories without your help. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, thanks for being a part of Audubon's Action Network!

U.S. Senate Considers Oil Spill Recovery Legislation
Audubon is calling for the Senate to pass legislation to direct BP's Clean Water Act penalties to Gulf Coast environmental recovery and to do so now. The lame duck congressional session in November and December offers the final opportunity to hold BP and other polluters accountable, put safeguards in place to prevent a disaster like this from happening again, and set the Gulf coast on a path toward healing and renewal.

Here's the scoop and a rallying cry from Chris Canfield, VP Gulf of Mexico Conservation and Restoration.

"This past week I was in Pensacola, Florida, at the inaugural meeting of the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force. It is a long name for group now tasked with facing a long river of challenges that has flowed into one of the world's great ecosystems. We should be encouraged that this unprecedented grouping of federal and state agencies is being led by a close friend of Audubon's, John Hankinson, Jr. Until this appointment, Hankinson was the chair of Audubon of Florida's board. We should be distressed, though, by the fact that there is no funding currently available for this effort. What a further tragedy it would be to waste the tremendous goodwill and passion across the country for finally restoring this great national treasure, as so many at the meeting described it. Let's get our elected leaders, especially our senators, to respond now and put the money where it is most urgently needed." Learn more.

Hundreds of people responded last week to Audubon's efforts to support managing the important Snail Kite habitat on Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) by downloading our Factsheet and by testifying at a public hearing before management agencies on Friday, November 6. Thank you all for rallying to protect Snail Kites.

Nine Audubon volunteer leaders from Kissimmee Valley and Ocklawaha Audubon chapters joined Audubon of Florida staff scientist Paul Gray, Ph.D to support aquatic plant management actions that will protect enough exotic hydrilla and exotic apple snails that currently sustain the Snail Kite breeding efforts. The hearing was run jointly by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

A local issue has taken on national importance because federally endangered Snail Kite numbers have dropped from more than 3,000 birds ten years ago to less than 700 today. If trends continue, the species could be extinct in a few decades. The Snail Kite is plagued by two problems. In the Kissimmee Valley region, its habitat has been invaded by exotic aquatic plant and snail species that when controlled, leave the Kites with virtually no habitat. In Okeechobee and the southern Everglades, development-driven water management and extreme weather have degraded the natural habitats and availability of food so dramatically that Kite nesting has failed in this area.

More than half the nesting Snail Kites now depend on the exotic apple snails that hydrilla supports in Lake Toho. Normally, the exotics would be removed, but due to the urgent need to foster successful Kite breeding, Audubon supports the agencies' position that the exotics should be temporarily protected.

Concerns were raised at the meeting of losing boating access if the hydrilla gets too thick and the agencies agreed to maintain boating lanes and fishing holes to sustain the economic importance of the lake, while protecting as much potential habitat for Kites as possible.

48 Hours to Stop 6 Years of Polar Bear Poisoning

Threatened polar bears, frogs and other wildlife are highly susceptible to the poison endosulfan. Yet, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to allow this poison to remain on the shelves for another six years.

Help save wildlife! Urge EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to fast-track the ban on the deadly poison endosulfan.

Lethal to Amphibians

Endosulfan is lethal to threatened northern leopard frogs and also dangerous for farm workers and others who are exposed to it.

Endosulfan is a deadly chemical that is highly toxic to polar bears, amphibians and farm workers. The Environmental Protection Agency approved its ban in June.

So why allow endosulfan to remain on the market for another six years?

Urge EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson to fast-track the ban on the deadly poison endosulfan.

Public comments are due to the EPA on Friday (September 17th), so we only have two more days to send EPA this simple message: Ban endosulfan now!

Endosulfan is highly toxic to birds and mammals and very highly toxic to aquatic animals -- both vertebrate (fish, amphibians) and invertebrates (mollusks, insects, gastropods).

EPA has documented that endosulfan can travel thousands of miles from the areas where it is used and that it is one of the most abundant organochlorine pesticides found in the Arctic.

Polar bears, for example, are particularly at risk. Endosulfan is a highly persistent pollutant that accumulates in polar regions and collects in the fats of seals and other polar bear prey. It was in part due to the high levels found in these animals that led EPA to take action this past June.

Help save polar bears. Take action now.

The sooner we get rid of U.S. uses the better.

Polar bears will benefit, but so will farm workers who apply the chemical. All of us will benefit -- endosulfan is one of the most commonly detected pesticides in U.S. water. Kids in particular will be better off given their vulnerability to the effects of pesticides.

In fact, endosulfan is an endocrine disruptor, and low dose exposure while in the womb is linked to autism and birth defects.

Let's get rid of this awful chemical. Please take action now.

California has already done what the U.S. Congress won't taken decisive action to fight climate change. And the positive ripples from California's leadership are being felt by all of us.

State and regional action to fight global warming is one of the most hopefuly aspects of today's climate picture. EDF's California Climate Director, Derek Walker, explains why.

Even if you have never set foot in the state of California, you need to care about this.

With the U.S. Senate almost certainly incapable of producing a climate and energy bill, the urgent strategy to stop global warming becomes a multi-faceted one.

California, by itself the eighth largest economy in the world, has always been a leader in environmental protection and global warming is no exception. In 2006, California passed a law requiring all state greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced to 1990 levels by the year 2020. That law in turn became the basis for a regional partnership including seven states and four Canadian provinces.

The so-called Western Climate Initiative is in the process of setting up a regional cap and trade system for climate pollution, much like the one already operating in Europe.

The even better news is that the Western Climate Initiative is only one part of a growing nationwide trend toward state and regional efforts to what Washington cannot or will not do.

We spoke with Derek Walker, Director of the California Climate Initiative for EDF, to learn more about California's efforts, and the state and local approach to climate and energy action in general.

300 Rare Cook Inlet Beluga Whales Face Extinction Threatened by Alaska Officials

Prairie dogs moved to safer ground at Thunder Basin

Collaborative relocation project bodes well for recovery of prairie species

From the outside, it looked like a simple matter of moving animals from one place to another. But for our Rocky Mountain Representative Jonathan Proctor, it was a precedent-setting triumph for wildlife conservation on America's National Grasslands.

Proctor worked 16-hour shifts for seven straight days this July, helping trap 120 prairie dogs and relocating them to a protected area within Thunder Basin National Grassland in eastern Wyoming. Thus began a unique collaborative partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, Wyoming Game and Fish, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and fellow prairie dog experts from the Humane Society of the United States, World Wildlife Fund and Biodiversity Conservation Alliance to relocate hundreds of prairie dogs from the periphery of this protected area to their new home at its center.

Prairie dogs are a "keystone" species of the Great Plains. They once numbered in the millions, or even billions, and provided abundant food and shelter for numerous other species of wildlife. But by the early 1900s, less than five percent remained as a result of plowing, poisoning, exotic disease and shooting. Prairie dogs live in colonies that once covered 10 to 20 percent of the Great Plains, but today these colonies cover less than one percent.

Protect Habit for the Less than 100 Florida Panthers Left

There are less than a 100 Florida panthers left, making it one of America's most endangered species.

Although the Florida panther was originally declared an endangered species by the federal government in 1967, the amendment to the Endangered Species Act which required each species so listed to also have "designated critical habitat" did not go into effect until 1978.

As a result, no critical habitat exists for America's only big cat east of the Mississippi.

The Interior Department has the ability under the Endangered Species Act to protect the remaining habitat now. Urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to designate critical habitat for the Florida panther today. »

ALACHUA COUNTY, FL - The Alachua County Health Department (ACHD) has detected mosquito borne diseases in the County. "Our sentinel
surveillance system indicates that disease transmission is occurring," stated Anthony Dennis, Environmental Health Director at the
ACHD. "Taking a few simple steps can drastically reduce the chances of contracting
a mosquito-borne illness."

Symptoms of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) may include headache, fever, fatigue, dizziness,
weakness, and confusion. Physicians should contact ACHD if they suspect an individual may have a mosquito-
borne illness.

Florida Department of Health (FDOH) laboratories provide testing services for physicians treating patients with clinical signs of
mosquito-borne diseases.

The ACHD continues to advise citizens to remain diligent in protecting themselves from mosquito bites by following the "5 D's,"
which include:

* Drainage - Check aroundyour home to rid the area of standing water, which is where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

* DEET - When the potential exists for exposure to mosquitoes, repellents containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, or
N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide)are recommended. Picaridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are other repellent options.

* Dress - Wear clothing that coversmost ofyour skin.

* Dusk and Dawn - Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active.

Dear Andrew,

Even as efforts to fully choke the 100-day spill this week appearing promising, oil continues to impact birds and their habitats, and Audubon immediate response efforts continue. But the hoped-for halt to the immediate crisis in the gulf will also set the stage for its long term recovery.

Two Audubon Volunteers Help with Bird Recovery
They wait for hours under a canvas canopy in the broiling heat of Port Sulphur, Louisiana, ready to spring into action when a radio call announces a transport boat is arriving with bird and wildlife casualties. On this particular day in July, Dale and Matt played their part in Audubon's Gulf Oil Response by assisting with the transport of twenty birds to the Bird Rehabilitation Center. Eleven oiled birds made it safely to the Center, while nine others were recovered either DOA or died on their way to the docks.

Audubon transport aides have a heart-wrenching, but essential role in the rescue process. They ensure accurate documentation of the number, species and condition of the birds being brought to shore, as well as the transfer of the birds from the boats to the transport vans. The vans then take them to the Bird Rehab Center where highly trained professionals focus on new "saves" and prepare them for release.

Matt, a New Orleanian working in the music recording industry, feels the emotional strain from his time on the docks. "This isn't my first day to see this, and it doesn't get any easier each time I do it. It's hard to wrap your head around why this is going on and to not think that we're all partially accountable. I know it's got me thinking and acting a lot differently, more responsibly."

A retired Wisconsin native with a background in soil and water conservation, Dale hopes that some good can come out this devastation. "I wish that all Americans would realize the role we've played in helping create this situation. It's our demand on this type of energy (fossil fuels) that's caused this. If others could see what I've seen here, maybe we'd all take conservation more seriously."

For now, both are acting to make a difference.

A Prescription for Long Term Recovery
On Wednesday, Audubon and its Louisiana Coastal Restoration partners released a plan to restore wetlandsa critical step forward that will benefit birds, wildlife and people of the region. The recommendations included in the report, entitled "Common Ground: A Shared Vision for Restoring the Mississippi River Delta," by Environmental Defense Fund, National Audubon Society and the National Wildlife Federation, outlines the necessary steps to restore and rebuild an ecosystem that has lost more than 2,300 square miles of wetlandsan area larger than the state of Delawaresince the 1930s. The three environmental organizations came together to seek solutions to one of our nation's most pressing environmental challenges. According to the report," The loss of coastal wetlands to oil contamination may speed up today's alarming land loss, leaving an already weakened ecosystem even more vulnerable to storms and other man-made assaults." The good news is that the collaborative effort is bringing together the expertise, knowledge and supporters of all three organizations. Learn more.

Audubon Gulf Response Volunteers Keep Things in Tune on Grand Isle
In this small Louisiana community, human and avian inhabitants alike are reeling from the oil spill's impacts. But thanks to our terrific volunteers, last weekend's music fans at the Island Aid Concertheld to benefit the town were able to enjoy a much-needed good time, while Least Tern colonies went about their business as usual. Beach concerts can sometimes by tough on birds who are trying to care for their young, but our volunteer beach stewards kept things harmonious for all. Read more.

Audubon to Testify on Behalf of Gulf Living Resources
Melanie Driscoll, Audubon's director of bird conservation in Louisiana, will testify on a panel convened by the federal government's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement in New Orleans Wednesday, Aug. 4. Melanie will speak on behalf of the living resources of the Gulf Coastbirds, other wildlife, habitats and peopleand urge the federal government to impose the highest possible safety standards and containment requirements on companies like BP so that a disaster like this never happens again. Melanie was asked by government officials to participate in the hearing because of her expertise and Audubon's recognized leadership not only now, during the oil disaster, but across the Gulf Coast for decades.

Latest Webcast Gives a Taste of Coastal Bird Survey Training
Based on feedback from our first two webcasts, we took a somewhat different tack and provided a thumbnail of our coastal bird survey training and a good introduction to using ebird.org for recording observations. For beginners and seasoned birders alike, everyone can help with Gulf restoration efforts by recording bird sightings and adding to the body of information we have about breeding, migration and other bird data to help Audubon scientists and others with recovery plans. Knowing how the spill is affecting bird populations is critical to how we ensure their ultimate recovery from the disaster. Even data from outside the Missisissipp River corridor is useful, so whether you are on the East coast, the West coast or somewhere in between, your citizen science efforts are important.

I have some fantastic news about our threatened polar bears!

In the wake of the largest oil spill in U.S. history, President Obama and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar today took an important step toward preventing the next offshore oil disaster one that could jeapordize the survival of America's already fragile polar bear population.

Around noon Eastern Time, the president announced a moratorium on deepwater offshore drilling in the Chukchi Sea offering these majestic Arctic hunters a much-needed reprieve from Shell Oil's dangerous drilling scheme in key polar bear habitat.

Over the last few weeks, caring Defenders supporters like you sent more than 118,000 messages to President Obama, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke (who oversees the National Marine Fisheries Service).

Today, your hard work paid off, as President Obama and Interior Secretary Salazar acknowledged the very serious threat that drilling activities pose to the sensitive ecosystems that sustain the Chukchi's polar bears, bowhead whales and other wildlife.

Defenders' senior marine policy advisor Richard Charter put it best in a statement to the press earlier today:

"President Obama and Interior Secretary Salazar should be commended for suspending Shell's plans to drill in the Arctic Ocean this summer. The Arctic environment absolutely could not stand an oil spill like the one we're now seeing in the Gulf of Mexico -- any spill, in fact, would have devastating effects on Arctic wildlife, and it's clear that we couldn't clean it up.

Today's announcement by the Obama administration is a HUGE victory in our fight to prevent the next offshore oil disaster, but make no mistake: our fight is from over.

Yesterday, I took my third trip to Florida's Panhandle this week. And as I spoke with Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, and local business leaders, I told them what I've been seeing and hearing from Floridians since the news of the oil spill began -- that we are worried about the threat to our economy, to many Floridians' livelihoods, to our way of life.

And like nearly every conversation I've had as we watch the oil move towards Florida beaches, this one also ended with the same resolve:

We cannot risk having another accident like this anywhere near Florida's beaches.

That's why I'm working for a constitutional amendment banning drilling off of our coast. It's the only way this will never happen again.

Dear friends,

First let me thank everyone who has forwarded Safe Tips for Cleaning Litter off Beaches. We have had numerous press responses and the word is getting out to leaders of volunteer efforts to clean up our beaches.

If you have experience as a beach bird steward, we need your help. We just heard from the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, at www.mobilebaynep.com, that they could use volunteers to help with beach debris cleanup.

Their clean up is scheduled for today at 3 p.m. Central Time.

The Estuary Program particularly wants Audubon volunteers who can help guide other clean up volunteers to avoid impacting shorebirds and shorebird habitats.

We are advised that the volunteers have our guidance but may not follow it to the letter.

This is not oil spill clean up and you are not required to have Hazardous Materials Training.

If you are experienced, live within range, and can help, please report to one of the command post locations at 3 p.m. in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Safe Tips for Cleaning Litter off Beaches:

For those who want to clean litter from the beaches in anticipation of oil coming ashore, Audubon recommends the following:

Use approved access points and avoid walking or hiking through marshes or seagrass beds.

Stay below the tidal line.

Leave natural debris in place because it provides nesting benefits to shorebirds and other wildlife.

Only remove man-made litter.

Do not place litter in the dunes or above the high water line.

Avoid use equipment such as rakes, shovels or tractors.

Do not bring ATVs or other motorized vehicles onto the beach.

Do not bring dogs onto the beach (dogs are a primary source of beach bird disturbance and mortality.)

A major water emergency has been declared for all communities east of route 128. There has been a break in the MWRA system. Thousands of gallons of water are flowing into the Charles River. In order to keep up the pressure, water will now be used from a variety of other sources, such as the Sudbury Aqueduct, Chestnut Hill Reservoir and Spot Pond Reservoir. Those sources are not treated for use as drinking water. Therefore, all water to be used for drinking needs to be actively boiled for at least one minute.

Although the Florida panther was originally declared an endangered species by the federal government in 1967, the amendment to the Endangered Species Act which required each species so listed to also have "designated critical habitat" did not go into effect until 1978.

In a horrifying move this week, President Obama proposed to open vast new expanses of our coastlines to offshore oil and gas drilling.

Every 30 minutes, an area of coastal land the size of a football field vanishes from the Mississippi Delta.

The Mississippi Delta is the world's seventh largest river delta, but we are losing these wetlands at an alarming rate. Please do your part by emailing President Obama and urging him to restore coastal Louisiana. »

Eighty years of national actions to channelize and control the Mississippi River for economic development and navigation have diverted sediment and freshwater from the Delta.

As a result, since the 1930s, more than 1.2 million acres, an area the size of Delaware, has disappeared.

Congress directed agencies to work together on a restoration plan in 1990. But while multiple plans have been written, little has been accomplished on the ground. President Obama's leadership offers us a new opportunity to get coastal restoration right. Ask him to restore coastal Louisiana. »

AZA Grants Certification To Lubee Bat Conservancy

Silver Spring, Maryland (March 16, 2010) The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) today announced that the Lubee Bat Conservancy was granted certification by AZA's independent Accreditation Commission.

Located on a 110-acre property outside Gainesville, Florida, Lubee Bat Conservancy houses the largest and most diverse collection of tropical Old World fruit bats (Pteropodidae) in the world, and is recognized as a unique center dedicated to research, education and conservation of these threatened bats. The center hosts researchers and offers teaching and informal science education opportunities in partnership with colleges, universities, zoological institutions, museums and others.

"Lubee Bat Conservancy is one of the best in the world because it has met the highest standards in the world," said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. "It takes hard work and dedication to meet Association of Zoos and Aquariums Standards."

Each year Lubee Bat Conservancy connects to the local north central Florida community through environmental education programs delivered to local students, and it's "Florida Annual Bat Festival". Hosted at the center in the fall, this popular "batty" event attracted 2,300 visitors in 2009, offering a world class setting in which to view the real stars of the night; bats. This year, Lubee Bat Conservancy opens the doors of its newly certified center to the public on Saturday 13^th November.

To be certified, Lubee Bat Conservancy underwent a thorough investigation to ensure it has and will continue to meet ever-rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety. AZA requires zoos and aquariums to successfully complete this rigorous review and inspection every five years in order to be members of the Association.

"As a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Lubee Bat Conservancy is a true leader in wildlife conservation," Maddy added.

The certification process includes a detailed application and a meticulous on-site inspection by a team of trained zoo and aquarium professionals. The inspecting team observes all aspects of the institution's operation in areas such as animal care; keeper training; safety for visitors, staff, and animals; conservation efforts; veterinary programs; financial stability; risk management; and other areas. The inspection team prepares an extensive written report for the Accreditation Commission. Finally, top officials are interviewed at a formal Commission hearing, after which certification is granted, tabled, or denied. Any institution that is denied may reapply one year after the Commission's decision is made.

This threatened subspecies of black bear is found in Florida, southern Georgia and southern Alabama.
Because it's usually warm in Florida, many of our black bears do not hibernate, or only hibernate for a short time.

Elephants are literally dying for their teeth. Despite an international ban on the elephant ivory trade, 38,000 elephants are killed
by poachers each year for their tusks.1

As wildlife trade representatives meet in Doha, Qatar this month, they'll debate a proposal to allow countries with stockpiles of
ivory to sell it -- a move that could spur an already booming illicit international market for tusks.

Cold Snap Challenges Florida Wildlife

Unseasonably cold weather has affected Florida's iconic wildlife, including manatees, sea turtles, crocodiles, saltwater fish.

In the first six weeks of 2010, over 300 manatees were found dead, mostly from the frigid temperatures -- and cold-stressed manatees
continue to be rescued. Agencies and volunteers collected over 4,500 stranded sea turtles, many of which survived after treatment.
And over 100 endangered crocodiles have perished in the cold weather.

Scientists say that extreme temperature shifts -- both cold and warm -- are associated with global climate change.

In Memoriam

Sam Hamilton

The conservation community reeled with the sudden and unexpected death of Sam Hamilton, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service.

Sam's career in conservation spanned over thirty years beginning at age 15 as a Youth Conservation Corps member in Mississippi.
Throughout his career, he championed collaboration among federal and state organizations and private citizens, leading to innovative
partnerships to restore and conserve wildlife habitat across the country.

"Sam Hamilton was making great strides in unifying and mobilizing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after what was a long and
difficult eight years under the last administration," said Defenders' Executive Vice President and former Fish and Wildlife Service
Director Jamie Rappaport Clark. "He brought integrity and biological creativity back to the agency."

Our condolences go out to the Hamilton family. While we have lost a great conservation colleague way too soon, we are confident that
his important work conserving wild things and special places will continue within the Fish and Wildlife Service and beyond.

Education Services Volunteers, Environmental Lands Division

Guided hikes through coastal mangrove and upland ecosystems of the Preserve are held each Saturday of the month. Join us to learn
about the coastal environment and the early residents of Weedon Island Preserve. Be sure to bring water and a snack for this
two-hour hike. A hat and closed-toe shoes are also recommended. Pre-register by 2:00 pm on the Friday prior to the tour of your
choice. Free. Recommended ages: 6 and up.

Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter

Participants will learn to think and research like an archaeologist as they investigate historic shelters using the archaeological
process in this afterschool program. Families are encouraged to participate in this curriculum developed by the U.S. Department of
the Interior's Bureau of Land Management that teaches investigative skills of mapping, classifying, and identifying an
archaeological site. Presented by the Florida Public Archaeology Network, program sessions are scheduled for every other Thursday
from January 21 through May 27, 2010. Free. Spaces are limited so register early! Recommended for families with children ages 8 and
up.

Weedon Island Teacher Workshop - Islands and the People

Saturday, March 6, 2010 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Education Services Staff, Environmental Lands Division

A great opportunity for teachers only, this 6-hour training session uses Weedon Island Preserve as a study site. Teachers will
participate in activities that help them train students to identify habitats of the Preserve, recognize what an estuary is and how
it works, and understand how the coastal habitats were utilized by humans for 2000 years through the basic principles of
archaeology. The objective of the Islands and the People curriculum is to raise awareness about the interactions of humans and the
environment. Pinellas County School teachers can receive component credit for this workshop. Lunch will be provided. Free. Spaces
are limited so register early! For teachers only.

Coastal Nesting Birds

Many shore and sea birds use the coastlines of the Tampa Bay area as their nesting homes. The survival of some of these species
depends, in part, on the state or federal laws that protect them. Learn about our local populations of least terns, American
oystercatchers, and black skimmers and their critical habitats. Free. A limited number of Tina Tern booklets with activities will be
offered. Pre-registration is required. Recommended for all ages.

The Great Weedon Bird Quest

Join us on a quest to find Weedon Island Preserve birds! Learn the identifying marks and behaviors of our feathered year-round
residents and seasonal visitors while helping us compile an annual checklist of the Preserve's birds. These hikes are designed to
take advantage of all levels of birding experience. Binoculars and bird guides are available. Hikes are scheduled for the second
Friday of each month. Please join us for a relaxing morning outing led by experienced birders. Call us for more information and to

William Marquardt, Ph.D., Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida

Focusing on the southeastern United States, Dr. Marquardt provides some alternative perspectives on shell mounds previously
interpreted as architectural features, temple mounds, and feasting sites. Observed abundances of particular shell species can result
from local or regional ecological conditions and abrupt climate changes. Shell rings on the Georgia and South Carolina coasts were
probably built to conserve and store unconfined water. To understand ancient shell mounds, we need a sediment-oriented approach to
the study of mound deposits and more attention to the environmental contexts in which shell mounds accumulated. This lecture,
co-sponsored by the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society, is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is requested.
Recommended for adults.

Poster Exhibit: Earth from Space

Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC

Earth from Space is a set of 20 large color reproductions of images captured by high-tech satellites constantly circling the globe.
These satellite images provide clues about the dynamic nature of our planet, documenting environmental cycles, natural disasters,
and human-made ecological effects. They record conditions and events that are nearly impossible to document on the planet's surface.
Visit the Smithsonian Institution's companion website that compliments this national traveling exhibit at
http://www.earthfromspace.si.edu/. Free. This exhibit is on display during regular Center hours through August 31, 2010.

Solar Cyclists at University of Florida

Libraries' Green Team hosts eco-event

SolarCycle Week, hosted by the Smathers Libraries, recently wrapped up its week-long series of events, culminating with the arrival of the Solar Cyclists. Groups came together January 25th-31st from all over campus to learn more about sustainability, solar power and the incredible around-the world cycling journey of the Solar Cyclists, Susie Wheeldon and Jamie Vinning.

The program, made possible by the George A. Smathers Libraries in partnership with the UF Office of Sustainability, worked to engage faculty, staff, students and the local community around renewable energy topics.

Orangutan and Hound, Suryia and Roscoe, Best Of Friends

Friends forever.....

The orangutan was in a rescue and not doing well. This old hound wandered in absolutely emaciated and the orangutan snapped to like his buddy had arrived. He stayed with the hound night and day until he was well and in the whole scenario, found a reason to live. They are now inseparable. Isn’t that sweet?

Suryia and Roscoe - Best Of Friends

Doggy paddle's the order of the day here for the couple who live at the Tigers sanctuary in Myrtle Beach , South Carolina .

Suryia and Roscoe spend hours together every day - they're particularly keen on swimming.

The two mates see the funny side of most things.

There's always time to chill.

For once, Roscoe's letting it all hang out.

The three-year-old orangutan goes everywhere with Roscoe.

A dog's not just a man's best friend, he's an orangutan's too.

Protect Martens and Their Forest Homes

Help Save Martens and Other Wildlife

Rare martens are just some of the animals that are increasingly threatened by unbalanced management of our national forests.

Please urge the Obama administration to restore balance on our national forests and preserve habitat for martens and other wildlife.

Help us reach our goal of submitting 20,000 comments by the February 16th (Tuesday) deadline!

Dear Andrew,

If you're lucky enough to come across an American marten, odds are you're in a healthy forest. These shy, weasel-like animals feed on small mammals, fish, insects and fruit and depend on older, undisturbed forests for survival.

But in many parts of their range, martens are declining as America’s forests become more fragmented due to indiscriminate logging and other irresponsible development on our national forests.

Fortunately, you can do something to help safeguard the public lands that martens and other wildlife need to thrive.

Federal officials are currently formulating plans that will directly impact nearly 200 million acres of public lands -- and the wildlife that depends on them to survive. But they need to hear from you.

Take action now -- urge federal officials to safeguard our wildlife and wild places by ensuring our national forests are managed to protect our wildlife and their habitat.

The U.S. Forest Service administers nearly 200 million acres of magnificent landscapes and diverse ecosystems, which support an incredible array of fish, wildlife and plants including key habitat for martens and iconic animals such as antelope, bison, bighorn sheep and elk.

Our public lands can be safe havens for wildlife. But even our national forests face threats from poorly planned logging and energy production, as well as the risks of a changing climate. The loss of fish and wildlife populations on public lands can threaten clean water, recreational opportunities and other important benefits provided by these public lands.

Defenders of Wildlife is working hard on Capitol Hill to pass America's Wildlife Heritage Act -- key legislation that provides essential steps to protect wildlife on our national forests. But the Obama administration can act now to protect our wildlife and wild places with strong rules for managing our national forests.

Please take a moment right now to speak out to protect martens and other American wildlife.

Our national forests provide refuge for struggling wildlife like the marten, house the watersheds that provide drinking water to 60 million people across the country and provide millions of us with access to camping, hiking, kayaking and canoeing, hunting, angling, and wildlife viewing (which, according to the Outdoor Industry Foundation, contribute $730 billion annually to the U.S. economy).

The future of our public lands is simply too important to be left to chance. Please send your message today -- the deadline for comments is Tuesday, February 16th.
